The Case for Change
Children across The Weald face long commutes, limited school choice, and rising concerns around safety, wellbeing, and attendance.
Current Challenges
- Very long daily journeys to allocated schools and associated safeguarding concerns on transport.
- Isolation from friends after school because pupils are dispersed across distant schools.
- Limited options outside very large secondary schools, with Year 7 cohorts often far larger than local primary cohorts.
- Curriculum mismatch for many pupils in currently allocated schools.
- Growing mental health concerns linked to travel pressures, unsuitable provision, and lack of belonging.
Evidence from Families and Attendance
- Families are managing children placed at two or three different secondary schools in different directions.
- Some pupils leave home before 7am to access transport, and families often provide private transport due to safety concerns.
- High absenteeism has been reported in allocated schools, with many children missing at least one tenth of timetabled lessons.
- Elected home education is increasingly seen as the only viable option for some families.
- Loss of local peer networks has increased reliance on social media at a time of known risks for children.
Impact on Families and Community
- Parents face significant financial and time burdens from school travel.
- Employment is affected when families must provide daily transport or home education.
- Children report anxiety and reduced social development due to distance and disengagement from mainstream schooling.
- Wider community cohesion is weakened as school is no longer a shared local anchor.
